Tournament Report – Ashby 7s They promised to entertain and there's no doubt
Sons of Serevi did just that in their debut
tournament at Ashby last weekend.
While other sides brought squads of players, the
Sons emphasised what an exclusive club they were
by bringing just seven elite players to the event.
Despite having to go through the rigmarole of
making public appearances at various venues in
Ashby the night before - as well sampling the many
local tipples on offer so as not to offend the
residents - the Sons kicked off their campaign
against White Hart Warriors. While trying to find
their feet the Sons battled hard throughout before
finally going down 43-0, but the best was yet to
come.
Next up were Dalton, a side featuring and coached
by Fijians, but with fires in their belly the Sons
were up for the challenge. Player of the
tournament
Pete Irish excelled with his searching kicks for
touch, Stickler carried on despite taking a mighty
blow to the eye and Tom
Bright even made it on the pitch despite taking
almost an hour to prepare himself so he looked as
good as possible for the cameras.
There was even a try-scoring opportunity when Rhys
Watkins and Alex Mead combined to send Scott Allen
scampering down the touchline only for the flying
winger to be brought down within yards of the
line.
A few scraps later though and the game was over
but
the Sons had done themselves proud despite a
misleading 40-0 scoreline.
Next up came one of the tournament favourites
Prowling Pretenders, another side complete with
Fijians (the Sons appeared the only side at Ashby
to not have islanders in the side, we merely have
the hearts of Fijians).
Unfortunately having seen the side demolish both
White Hart and Dalton, the Sons found it hard to
raise the game with the only real opportunity and
venture into the opponents' 22 coming with a
delightful (in this writer's opinion) chip and
chase from Mead that unfortunately finished with
an
awkward bounce. The scoreline for this is still
coming in as the judges attempt to tot up the
points.
The final game of the game was in the form of the
plate quarter-final against Derby University. With
the opposition pretending to be drunk throughout
the day - despite only drinking one can of lager
between them - the opposition were far from
popular
and the Sons were given mighty support in Ashby.
But, having no subs was taking its toll on the
Sons
and they succombed to a fourth defeat. Having
contributed to over 200 points in four games
however, they certainly entertained and the spirit
of sevens certainly ran strong with them, as Ashby
organiser Ben Bourne pointed out: "Thank you,
thank
you and thank you. What a great bunch of lads the
Sons of Serevi were! You guys will be one of the
first teams on the invite list next year. It is
teams like SoS that makes sevens' tournaments what
they are. I wish you all the best for your future
games."
With Nottingham Solstice Sevens around the corner,
the public won't have to wait too long to get
another taste of the Sons of Serevi.

Great Effort Guys
AS Ashby 1st XV captain I must say a massive well
done and thank you. What you guys achieved over
the weekend deserves recognition. Looks like you
hit the town hard taking in the delights that are
The Loft and Ciros. Anybody who comes out alive
from that is a better man than most. Keep it up
and never stop drinking oh and playing rugby
