SONS RETURN TO ASHBY DE LA ZOUCH The Sons of Serevi followed up their debut
performance at Ashby in 2006, with a stunning run
of four defeats at this year's event. As the only
social side in a group made up of Bath Bandits,
Loughborough Students and Stash, the Sons
acquitted themselves bravely despite recording a
record 84-0 mauling in their opening fixture.
That crushing defeat to Bath Bandits (a side
surely packed with future pros), inspired them to
take an early lead against Stash through new star
James Parker but they couldn't hold out and fell
to a second defeat.
Even with victory beyond their grasp before the
game started, the much-loved Sons took to the
field against top university team Loughborough
with the kind of passion, fervour and bravery
that you've come to expect. Nonetheless they were
pummelled once again. Scores are irrelevant when
compared to the kind of commitment shown by the
Sons, but the stat-mongers among you may wish to
know 200 points were conceded in the group stages.
When faced with the only other social side at the
event in the knockout, the battered Sons fought
like men possessed but narrowly lost out by a
brace of tries to Birstall
"We can take something from the fact we looked so
much better than them," mused captain Alex
Mead. "I mean they may have been professional
sports stars of the future, but they we looked
awesome whereas they just looked rubbish. Even in
defeat i feel the ladies would always go for a
Son rather than one of these wannabes."
Chairman Chief Stickler agreed: "Potato," he
said, somewhat baffling everyone.
