SONS GET TONGAN LOVIN' AT CWMTAWE

THE SONS OF Serevi hit rugby's big stage on Saturday and got a thorough kicking for their troubles – courtesy of the Welsh Wizards and their six Tongan internationals. With our fame resulting in the Sons being asked to kick off the tournament on the main pitch against the multi-millionaire-backed Welsh Wizards, our heroes couldn't turn the challenge down - despite having just six players with ten minutes to go before kick-off. But armed with two hastily gathered recruits from a kindly west Walian coach, the Sons entered the fray to roars from the crowd. Unlike the trophy-laden Nottingham tournament, this was to have no fairy-tale ending as the Sons were smashed, bashed, knocked down, picked up, knocked down again and again and again. As Sons of Serevi-shaped holes started to appear all over the pitch, the Tongans ran in 67 unanswered points. The Sons fielded a team of just two backs and as the Tongans failed to knock the ball on even once or run into touch, they were never given a chance to make the most of their five forwards in the set-piece. On the plus side, Jase 'The Ace' Hori did come agonisingly close to scoring but was brought down about six inches from the line. "We were crushed like a wine grape under a fat Frenchman's foot," said captain Alex Mead of the Wizards defeat. "We were squished like snail under a postman's boot!" In the second game - after ignoring the call of the beer tent for just 14 more painful minutes - we took the field against a tough English side called the Cougars. Here the Sons made vast strides and even touched the ball once or twice, before losing it in an embarassing, and ultimately stupid, fashion. At times, we even got close enough to the opposition to make a vain grasp at their shirts in a half-arsed attempt to bring them down. Such passion showed in the scoreline with the Sons losing by 66 answered points. "It's progress," said Mead. "We just need to play 65 more games and then we can get a draw. Seriously though, we've learnt some valuable lessons here. The most important is never to enter Cwmtawe again! The second is to make friends with some Tongan people." The Sons of Serevi will be able to make amends to their severely battered egos (and considered they've never won a game, that shouldn't be too tough) this weekend when they play in their home tournament at Llandaff North on Saturday. "We're hoping the fans will be out for this one," said Mead. "I've got high hopes of the boys doing well this weekend, we just need that eighth man there - that's you SoS fans. Together we can make a difference!"

Cwmtawe was obviously a lesson. 7's should be fun. Getting stuffed or giving a stuffing does nobody any good. Look forward to seeing you all on Sat and you showing us what you are really made of. My round when you win your first game on Saturday. Paul Ford
